Watergate: The massive political scandal in the United States that began in 1972 when several men were caught breaking into the the Democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate hotel complex. A cover-up of the break-in led President Nixon to resign on August 9, 1974.

Humpty Dumpty: Character from famous English poem, the inspiration for the movie title. Humpty makes an appearance in Lewis Carrol’s Through the Looking Glass (Зазеркалье)

Separation of Powers: A term for a model for governance in democratic countries. The United States has three separate, independent branches, each with its own distinct powers: the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch.

Checks and Balances: System by which the different branches of government have powers to restrict each other's authority. For example: The president can veto legislation, but Congress can "override" this veto with a large majority. The president appoints judges, but the Senate must approve the judges. The Supreme Court has the authority to find legislative and executive actions unconstitutional.

Executive Privilege: Power claimed by the President and other members of the Executive branch of government to resist search warrants and other actions on the part of the legislative or judicial branches. President Nixon claimed executive privilege to avoid providing recordings of White House conversations to the Watergate special prosecutor.

Impeachment: Article 2, Section 4 of the United States Constitution states that president or vice president may be removed for treason, bribery, high crimes and misdemeanors. The House of Representatives has the power to impeach the president – there is then a trial in the Senate, which determines whether to convict and remove the president. Richard Nixon resigned rather than face impeachment. During the Monica Lewinsky scandal, President Clinton was impeached, but the Senate did not impeach him.

Plumbers: People assigned to fix leaks, both in the literal and figurative sense. Leaks could be from water, or in the case of Watergate, people assigned to stop leaks of secret information.

A Few Important Characters:

Bob Woodward and Carl Berstein: Washington Post investigative reporters, and the stars of the movie.

Deep Throat – the secret source for Woodward and Bernstein about the Watergate break-in. An editor at the Washington Post came up with this term, and was making a play on words related “deep background,” a term for information given to a journalist when the source cannot be mentioned by name in an article, and the name of a pornographic film. In 2005, it was revealed that this source was Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Deputy Director William Mark Felt, Sr.

Richard Nixon – the 37^th president of the United States, resigned as a result of the Watergate scandal.
